Riddles have been around and popular for thousands of years. They predate the writing of the Bible and the Greek Empire. Both the Bible and Greek literature contain them, and the authors seem to be somewhat familiar with them. This means that riddles and the concept of riddles are at least 1000 years old. One riddle dates back to a 1650 BC math problem, but the riddle itself was written much later. The original problem was conceived purely as a mathematical, and not as a riddle. For the people of those times, riddles were essentially metaphors or simply questions/statements with hidden meanings. One of the Old Testament stories, the story of Samson, discusses a riddle told by Samson to his friends: “From the eater, something to eat; something sweet out of the strong." He tells his friends this riddle and tempts them by offering them fine underwear and clothes as a reward. They go to his wife and threaten her if she does not give them an answer. She does so, but Samson continues to kill to punish them for going behind his back to his wife. In this case, the riddle is used to punish the men and, in turn, their society by demonstrating bad greed.

As far as one can tell, this riddle from the Bible is one of the oldest, if not the oldest riddle in the history of mankind. Even though it is very old and one of the first recorded mysteries, it has the elegance of any riddle in existence today and will likely be relevant for thousands of years to come.
