Next-Generation Family of Ethernet Switches Features Time Sensitive Networking and Scalable Port Bandwidths
Microchip Technology (Nasdaq: MCHP) has announced its next-generation LAN969x Ethernet switches, which are integrated with High-availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR) and Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) to simplify design processes. As the industrial automation market expands, it embraces innovative technologies like Machine Learning (ML) and robotic systems. To achieve reliable and deterministic communication necessary for controlling, monitoring, and processing data in these applications, the LAN969x switches offer scalable bandwidths ranging from 46 Gbps to 102 Gbps, powered by a robust 1 GHz single-core Arm® Cortex®-A53 CPU.

For applications that demand enhanced redundancy, the LAN969x Ethernet switches can be configured with HSR and PRP, which are hardware protocols that ensure zero-loss redundancy in Ethernet networks. These switches support multiple HSR and PRP Redundancy Box (RedBox) instances, capable of operating both in parallel and in series, as well as accommodating Ethernet port speeds from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps.
Additionally, the LAN969x can implement a QuadBox function, connecting two HSR networks, which is crucial for applications requiring high reliability and zero downtime. Traditional solutions that provide a QuadBox typically necessitate multiple components, increasing design complexity and system costs.
“Before the introduction of Microchip’s LAN969x Ethernet switches, customers wanting to implement TSN and HSR/PRP features needed multiple ICs. Our new LAN969x solution consolidates this functionality into a single chip, reducing component count and overall system costs,” stated Charles Forni, Vice President of Microchip’s USB and Networking Business Unit. “These devices are also supported by our VSC6817SDK IStaX Linux® application software package, enabling designers to accelerate their time to market.”
The LAN969x Ethernet switches are highly configurable, available with up to 30 ports, and support multiple interfaces, including RGMII, SGMII, QSGMII, USGMII, and USXGMII. This family targets secure and safety-critical applications requiring high-port-count switching links of 10M/100M/1G/2.5G/10G.
Security features are available with the LAN969x family, including secure boot and secure firmware execution aligned with the customer’s root-of-trust manufacturing processes. Security is enhanced through Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM)-based frame processing using a Versatile Content Aware Processor (VCAP), Arm Trusted Firmware methodology for rapid secure boot, crypto libraries, and hardware security accelerators for boot and code encryption, along with one-time programmable immutable key storage.
The LAN969x mid-range Ethernet switches complement Microchip’s TSN switch portfolio, which includes the SparX-5i family supporting up to 64 ports and 200 Gbps of switching bandwidth, as well as the LAN9662 and LAN9668, offering 4 to 8 ports and 4 to 11 Gbps of switch bandwidth.
