Pellet in offerta
What do you get if you mix slow-cooked pork, red onions, and garlic? A whole mess of flavor packed into a neat little package. And it just so happens that "Pellet in Offerta" is what we're talking about today.
We'll be exploring the history of this Italian dish and tracking down some of our favorite recipes for those of you who are new to the cooking scene. Plus, we'll share tips on picking out the best meat and spices to make your own custom "Pellet".
What's in a Name?
Today we're going to be delving deep into the origins of Polpette, which is Italian for meatballs. No matter what you call them, meatballs have been a staple food all over the world for centuries. In fact, people making them is one of the first signs of hominids actually learning to cook. So it's pretty safe to say that we've been eating these little guys since "the dawn of man".
So... Where do they come from? The clue can be found in their namesake – "Ball". There are many possible explanations for why we started shaping our food into round shapes, but most likely it comes down to easy storage and convenient transportation.
This is a smart move. After all, it's way easier to carry a bunch of round balls than it is to tote around a bunch of jagged cubes – who wants to carry a bunch of pointy sticks around?
It only makes sense that storing and transporting food in the easiest way possible would have been one of the major driving forces behind how our early ancestors ate. And with no refrigeration (and very few ways of cooking), it's easy to see why this might have worked out so well for our cousins from long ago. Plus, it gives credence to the whole idea that meatballs are "mankind's first wheel". But we digress...
Anyway, enough about ancient eating habits. Let's focus on the food we can eat today. Just because our ancestors didn't have the technology to cook food in a pan or freeze it doesn't mean we can't still make delicious goodies with every day ingredients. So let's take a look at some cooking tips and recipes for all of you who want to go back to basics and make your own "Pellet".
Taste Test
There are two big questions in life – What should I do? And when should I do it? – and we're going to help answer both of them right now.
