The Influence of $50 Tin Box on Your Lifestyle

GPS satellite signals currently facilitate communication with your mother, provide energy for your home, and assist in the landing of your aircraft; however, a low-cost plastic device has the potential to interfere with these functions.

A significant traffic disruption occurred in San Diego, California, shortly after noon. Air traffic controllers monitoring the airport's operations noticed that the system responsible for tracking incoming aircraft was nonfunctional. Additionally, the emergency pagers utilized to alert medical personnel at the Naval Medical Center ceased to operate. The traffic management systems that assist in directing maritime vessels also malfunctioned, posing a risk of disorder at the bustling port. Meanwhile, individuals on the streets attempted to use their cell phones, only to discover a lack of signal, and bank patrons attempting to withdraw cash from local ATMs faced denial. This issue persisted for an additional two hours.

The investigation into the enigmatic incident that occurred in January 2007 spanned three days. At that time, two Navy vessels were engaged in training exercises within the Port of San Diego. In an effort to evaluate the protocols for communication failures, technicians intentionally disrupted radio signals. Unfortunately, this action inadvertently interfered with the GPS satellite signals across a significant portion of the city.

Why do GPS outages cause so much disruption?

The functionality of satellite signals has expanded significantly beyond merely assisting your vehicle's satellite navigation system. GPS has evolved into an "invisible utility" that we depend on, often without conscious awareness. Telecommunications companies utilize GPS time signals to manage the communication between your phone and cellular towers. Energy providers employ GPS technology to synchronize power grids during their interconnection. Financial institutions and stock exchanges rely on satellites to generate timestamps, thereby mitigating the risk of fraud. Concurrently, the dependence of our society on GPS navigation continues to increase.

There are concerns among some individuals regarding our growing reliance on technology that is susceptible to failure, emphasizing that significant disruptions do not necessarily require extreme military exercises. A primary issue is the proliferation of GPS jammers—compact devices that can be easily installed on a vehicle's dashboard. These jammers are readily available for purchase online and are frequently utilized by individuals such as truck drivers who wish to conceal their locations from employers. The rising prevalence of these devices has led to complications at airports and has resulted in cellphone signal disruptions in various urban areas. When unobstructed, a jammer can interfere with GPS signals from several kilometers away. Consequently, it is not surprising that researchers globally are actively seeking solutions to avert severe GPS outages.

Stealth Utility

It is crucial to note that the failure of GPS today results in more than just a loss of navigation capabilities. According to Donald Jewell, who played a significant role in the development of GPS within the U.S. Air Force and currently serves as the editor-in-chief of GPS World magazine, our reliance on GPS often goes unnoticed. He estimates that over a billion GPS receivers are currently in use, with more than 90 percent relying solely on the precise timing signals transmitted by the satellites.

Mobile phones significantly utilize this stealth capability. As individuals move, communication towers need to coordinate with one another to transfer calls seamlessly, and GPS time signals offer an economical and precise method for achieving this synchronization. Additionally, the timing offset of each tower serves as a means of identification. In reality, numerous wireless communication technologies rely on GPS timing for their synchronization processes. This reliance likely contributed to the malfunction of traffic control and emergency pagers at the Port of San Diego in 2007.

Truck Cheating

Last intentionally created a basic, commercially available jammers. While the use of such low-tech devices is prohibited in the United States, the United Kingdom, and numerous other nations, they can be purchased online for as little as $30. Vendors assert that these devices are intended for privacy purposes. Their ability to obstruct devices that monitor a vehicle's movements has made them particularly appealing to truck drivers who wish to avoid electronic surveillance in their cabs. Additionally, they can interfere with GPS-based toll systems that rely on onboard receivers. Some criminals exploit these jammers to disable tracking devices in stolen cargo. "Initially, we believed that these jammers were assembled in a bedroom by a young individual with acne," states Last. "However, they are now being produced in factories in China."
