In 2017, John Henry Brennick and his wife Karen are captured at a US immigration point with an illegal baby during population control. The resulting prison experience is the subject of the movie. The prison is run by a private corporation bent on mind control.
In a futuristic USA, it's forbidden to give birth to more than one child for each woman. As usual, you can escape to Mexico to avoid the authorities in USA, which is exactly what John and Karen Brennick were trying to do when Karen is pregnant with her second child (their first child was born dead). When they think they have made it they are discovered and put to prison (for 31 years), a modern prison called the "Fortress" where the prisoners are controlled by lasers, neutron-cannons, cameras, mind-scanners and electronic pain-causing devices in their stomachs. With those odds, John still plans to escape with his wife.
In a dystopian future, America is a police state under population control of one woman one child. John Henry Brennick (Christopher Lambert) and his wife Karen (Loryn Locklin) are trying to sneak into Canada to have a baby. He is caught but his wife is assumed to have escaped. He is sent to the underground prison, the Fortress, run by prison director Poe (Kurtwood Smith) and computer Zed-10 from the Men-Tel Corporation. He is befriended by fellow new inmate Nino Gomez (Clifton Collins Jr). The prisoners are injected with "Intestinators" to torture and kill anyone who is out of line. Other prisoners include Poe's manservant Abraham who is waiting for parole, tech-savy D-Day, cellmate alpha-dog Stiggs, and prison gang leader Maddox. John finds that Karen is actually imprisoned in the same facility.

It starts off well with a solid setup of a dystopian future. The prison is interesting. It's a pretty good prison movie up to the fun fight with Maddox. Then Karen and Poe have a weird relationship which drains out the thrills and intensity. It tries to add a bunch of crazy sci-fi ideas to the premise. It's on its way to a solid B-movie until stumbling a little in the middle. Karen never gets to be a compelling character despite her central role. This is an almost good B-movie. the only reason why I am not giving this movie a 10 is because nothing is perfect..I would rather watch this movie over 95 percent of garbage that is brought to modern cinema's. This movie was very well put together from the underground prison facility to the artificial intelligence from which it operates, not to mention the twisted prison director who basks in his authority, hell it makes you feel as if you are in the shoes of the main character actor Christopher Lambert(a legend in my eyes). Another reason why this movie is so incredible is that the scenario/plot is one which could be very plausible in a futuristic world, truly gripping the mind and kept me wanting more, this one is right up there with classic's like total recall and I recommend it to anyone with the ability to see.

Here the situation is a bit complicated. In the States, only an R-Rated version was released, that, in the first place, cuts out two additional violent scenes. In Europe a slightly longer cut was released that still misses out these two violent scenes but features four slightly longer story scenes. Only in the UK, released on VHS and LD, the complete version of Fortress: the four story pieces + the two violent scenes, is available.
