Learn a little about Belém/PA
The history of Belém is intertwined with the history of the state of Pará through four centuries of formation and development. It fell to Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco, former Captain-Major of Rio Grande do Norte, one of the heroes of the expulsion of the French from Maranhão, the honor of leading an expedition of two hundred men with the objective of driving foreign corsairs away from the north coast and starting the colonization of the “Amazon Empire”.
It was founded on January 12, 1616 by Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco. He laid the foundations of the city in the place today called Fort do Castelo. There he built a fort with a palisade, in a quadrilateral made of mortar rammed earth and furnished with baskets. This fortification was initially named Presépio, today the historic Castelo Fort. Inside, a chapel was built, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Graça. Around the fort, the village began to form, which then received the name of Feliz Lusitânia, under the invocation of Our Lady of Belém.
