A young woman, Maggie Hayward (Bridget Fonda), is sentenced to death after murdering a policeman during a botched robbery. While awaiting trial she is approached by a government agent, Bob (Gabriel Byrne), who wants her to join a top secret assassination team. She doesn't cooperate and is executed...or so it seems. She awakes to find herself an unwilling recruit for the government organisation. She still plays hard to get but eventually comes around. With her training done, now she has to put it into practice - killing people, all while, on the surface, living a perfectly normal life.
A gang of armed drug addicts breaks into a drug store to try to steal drugs to fuel their habit. However, the police arrive too soon and all addicts but one are killed along with the store owner and several police officers. Maggie, is sentenced to death by lethal injection for killing a police officer; however, she wakes up after the execution to find that she has been spared in order to be trained as a government assassin. After a dramatic transformation, she is allowed to leave the training facility and start a new life for herself, on the condition that she always be on call for the government. However, she begins to discover that there is more to life than she had previously thought and soon begins to wish she could escape from her obligation. But the government isn't so easy to quit ...
This American version of "La Femme Nikita" from 1993 stars Bridget Fonda a a drug-addicted murderer who is saved from lethal injection by a government agent (Gabriel Byrne), who gives her the chance to train as an assassin. Naturally she takes it though she is very resistant.

She goes through the training and carries out assignments, but has to on the surface lead a normal life. When she meets and falls for J.P. (Dermot Mulrooney), having to keep so much of situation secret becomes difficult.

Bridget Fonda is excellent as Maggie, who is transformed into a classy killer. Gabriel Byrne gives a marvelous performance as her low-key recruiter, who winds up bonding with her. Harvey Keitel plays "The Cleaner" and he's scary as all get-out.

Very exciting film, violent, and fast-moving. Fonda seems to be retired now - she is a very appealing actress and handled the role beautifully. This exciting thriller may be an Americanized version of John Le Carre's Le Femme Nikita but it definitely stands on it's one two feet. It has everything a great movie needs; a great script, a very talented cast, and a solid plot.

Bridget Fonda shines as a drug addict who, after killing a cop in a drug bust, gets the death penalty. But after the "execution", she wakes up in a secure facility and is met by a man (Gabriel Byrne) who gives her a choice: become a paid assassin for the government, or die.

After accepting, she is taught everything she needs to know to be a good assassin. Her life seems to be everything she could hope for. but then she realizes that her life is not her own and she longs for freedom.

Anne Bancroft's role as an etiquette tutor is one of the highlights of the movie and Dermot Mulroney is wonderfully sexy as Fonda's love interest.

This is what a good thriller should be.
