OCA President Appreciates Tokyo 2020 Olympics Outstanding Success

The President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, proudly declared the Tokyo 2020 Olympics a "tremendous success" following the closing ceremony, Sunday (8/8/2021).

Sheikh Ahmad commended the International Olympic Committee, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Organizing Committee, the Olympic Committee of Japan and the Government of Japan for holding the Olympics during the global pandemic.
"I would like to congratulate all parties involved for hosting this wonderful 2020 Tokyo Olympics," said Sheikh Ahmad. More than 11,000 athletes from 205 National Olympic Committees and Olympic Refugee Teams have attended the Olympics and brought excitement around the world.

"A new national hero has been created who will occupy a special place in history for what they have accomplished in this difficult time. They have lifted the spirits of the people and brought pride to their people."

"The Olympic Council of Asia would like to express our full support for the decision to host the Olympics. They have been a tremendous success."

Sheikh Ahmad also said the efforts of the Asian National Olympic Committees and their athletes have demonstrated the high level of the Olympic Movement across the continent. Athletes from all five OCA zones are among the best in the world, dominating some sports and winning medals in many others.

"This shows the development of our Asian athletes and their progress from our Asian Games to the Olympics. The Asian Games have been an important stepping stone for the Olympics and provide athletes from all our NOCs with the experience to develop at the highest level."

"The International Olympic Committee has a trusted partner in Asia," he added.

"We are confident that next February's Beijing Winter Olympics will continue this success story, especially as they will learn a lot from Tokyo about the protocols and procedures required to host the Olympics at an unprecedented time around the world."
