We’ve long known it informally to be the case, and now it’s official: the Andalucían city of Málaga is in the top three cities in Spain for artistic and cultural attractions and activities.
The rise in status, as reported by SUR in English, has been confirmed by the influential ‘Observatory of Culture’ index, which is produced every year by the FundaciónContemporánea. The index shows Málaga behind only Madrid and Barcelona among the country’s highest ranked cultural cities.
Last year’s survey placed Málaga in fourth, which itself was quite the rise from the first edition of the index in 2009, when the city ranked 19th.
How does the ‘Observatory of Culture’ index come about?
To create the index, a questionnaire is sent to a panel of experts consisting of more than a thousand leading professionals in the culture and arts industry, including artists, writers, directors, actors, musicians, architects, and creators from across all fields.
Such key figures as editors, producers, promoters, gallery owners and managers, heads of foundations and directors of museums, theatres, cultural centres and institutions, also all contribute to the annual index.
Over half of the respondents, 53.6%, picked out Málaga as a cultural haven, with particular attention paid to the city’s resilience and commitment to the arts and culture sector since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Málaga Film Festival also won the admiration of those quizzed, who placed it among Spain’s top 10 most important cultural events or venues, alongside Madrid’s ‘Golden Triangle of Art’ comprising the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums.
Nine Andalucían events or venues appeared in the national list, and of these, seven were located in Málaga – including the Museo Picasso Málaga, the Festival Eñe, the Centre Pompidou Málaga, the GenalguacilMuseo Pueblo, and the Museo Carmen Thyssen.
