Landscape design is basically an art and career, practiced mainly by landscape architects, merging science and art. In contemporary practice, landscape design blends the subject of landscape design with that of backyard layout. The purpose is to create a thoughtful setting through customised layouts, which are controlled by a set of factors. These include environmental factors such as climate, terrain and people; also as architectural things such as form and function. Unity in the shape denotes the ability for a landscape to have a consistent form and not be overly distorted. As a result, an architect has to balance form with function, and use well-established patterns. Balance refers to the equality of scale and shapes in a landscape design. This principle is at the heart of all sorts of art, and landscape design incorporates this idea in its designs. Balance also ensures that a landscape architect's planned design could be accomplished, without losing any potential attractiveness.

Proportion another major principle involved in landscape design. It describes the scale and dimension of a landscape or garden. This is necessary because a landscape architect's occupation requires designing landscapes which will fit in with the surrounding area and be aesthetically pleasing. Therefore, it ensures that the buildings and attributes he/she generates are proportionate to the landscape that they are built on. Proportion describes an elegant design that gives information its deserved space and highlights its visual elements through the addition of equilibrium, balance, and proportion.

Lastly, the feel is also an important aspect in design. It describes the arrangement and layering of materials that make up the landscape. Texture may be used to enhance the visual effects of a landscape, or to protect it from harsh weather conditions. Additionally, it allows an architect to express his/her creativity by means of contrasting textures or subtle differences in substances.

Landscape design is among the most crucial concepts involved in landscape layout. A landscape architect must plan the design and layout of a landscape to make sure its compatibility with surrounding areas, in addition to any other special demands of the site.
