A thorough cyber assessment of navigation bridges may show that GPS signal loss, jamming or spoofing could result in some or all of the other navigational units being affected including gyrocompasses, steering systems, radar/ARPAs, echo sounders, DSC VHF radios, etc. Mitigations might include having manufacturers provide signal strength alarms on new GPS receivers, employment of inertial navigation systems, RF jamming detectors and alternate positioning systems like enhanced Loran (eLoran). The eLoran positioning system is already well-proven, highly jam-resistant, accurate as GPS and fills GNSS voids in areas like urban canyons, inside dense structures and tunnels, underground and underwater. A robust terrestrial system like eLoran is not susceptible to extreme space weather (ESW) like satellite systems.

Data from the test show that the micro-jammer’s signal disrupted commercial wireless signals inside the prison cell, which meant that if cellphones were operating inside the cell, they would have been rendered inoperable. At 20 ft. and 100 ft. outside the cell, however, the micro-jammer signals did not disrupt the commercial wireless signals.The data in the report will be used by BOP and the Department to understand the efficacy of micro-jamming, conduct further evaluation of jamming technology, and develop recommendations for strategic planning.

The weaponization of space includes placing weapons in outer space or on heavenly bodies as well as creating weapons that will transit outer space or simply travel from Earth to attack or destroy targets in space. The U.S. assessment is supported by a photo taken last month by the commercial satellite company DigitalGlobe and provided to The Wall Street Journal. It shows a suspected jammer system with its antenna extended on Mischief Reef, one of seven Spratly outcrops where China has built fortified artificial islands since 2014, moving sand onto rocks and reefs and paving them over with concrete.The electronic jamming equipment would be consistent with a 2016 U.S. Department of Defense report that said China's People's Liberation Army views such electronic warfare as a "force multiplier" and "would likely employ it in support of all combat arms and services during a conflict."

Jamming is a synonym for intentional interference, which is the deliberate radiation of electromagnetic signals at GNSS frequencies. Besides intentional interference, unintentional interference also occurs. Some GNSS bands are shared with certain radars, as well as amateur radio. Other sources are Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) used for airplane navigation, TV harmonics, as well as malfunctioning electronic equipment
