Original Title: The Black Swan
Genge: Action,Adventure,Drama,Family,History
Soon after Sir Henry Morgan is named Governor of Jamaica in 1674, he announces that the age of the pirate is over and asks his former captains to give up their ways and sail for England. Not everyone agrees and one in particular, Captain Leech, refuses. He does accept an offer however from English aristocrat Roger Ingram who provides him with sailing information in an attempt to unseat the newly appointed Governor. In an effort to thwart Ingram's plans, former pirate Captain Jamie Waring kidnaps Lady Margaret Denby, the previous Governor's daughter.
An ex-pirate contends with rowdy buccaneers and a love-hate relationship with an aristocratic woman who's tougher than she seems.
The "Black Swan" was one of the best swashbuckling movies of all time. I saw it first in a re-release when I was a teenager, and I fell in love with Maureen O'Hara, not realizing that some 40 years later I'd be living just one block from her in Los Angeles. My favorite scene in this movie is where a drunken pirate offers the priggish Tyrone Power character a swig of rum. Power responded with obvious disdain: "I'll do my drinking in Maracaibo," at which time they cut to a long shot of the ship heading toward Maracaibo. To this day, whenever anyone offers me a drink, I always answer, "Thanks, but I'll do my drinking in Maracaibo," to which they reply, "Huh?"
The Black Swan, you know, the 1942 version, right? is a bit of a slow Pirate movie that manages to finally going plot wise about 1/2 way through the movie. While you're waiting for that, you can marvel at the awesome 3 strip technicolor thing going on, and as well, feast on the ravishing Maureen O'Hara. Tyrone Power is in full pirate mode here, nothing really out of the ordinary that hasn't been done by other actors, Laird Cregar actually steals the show with his portrayal of Captain Morgan.. Yes, THAT Captain Morgan, before he was pasted on whiskey. So there's lots going for it, except maybe the story, which could have used some work.
