Natural shedding. How much is typical?
Most people have at least 100,000 hair follicles on their head and shed up to100 strands per day.
The hair sheds as part of its natural cycle, which means that seeing hairs down your shower, hairbrush or clothes is not usually a cause for concern. While it might look like a lot, it is a healthy, normal part of everyday life and this natural process makes no difference on the scalp's appearance.
Life cycle of hair
Hair grows in cycles and every single strand is at a different stage. Understanding the hair growth cycle can help you realize why shedding is natural and inevitable.
The hair growth cycle is generally considered to comprise three phases: active growth (anagen), transitional regression (catagen), and rest (telogen). Then, the hair strand prepares to detach from your scalp and a new one begins to grow in its place. Hair shedding has been assumed to be part of the telogen phase, but it was found that shedding actually occurs as a distinct phase (Exogen).
What causes excessive hair shedding
Excessive hair shedding occurs when something interferes with the normal hair cycle. When it comes to hair shed there are so many potential triggers, but the most common causes include: hereditary factors, stress, immune system overreacting, some medicines and treatments, nutrition, hair-care products and treatment, lack of nutrients and hormonal changes (particularly in women).
Extreme shedding – How much is too much?
While we all love healthy, voluminous and thick hair, this is not always the case. Plenty of completely normal reasons play a role in how much hair you shed daily. But how much is too much?
When you start to notice a lot more hair clogging up your drain or coming out easily with just gentle pressure when you brush your hair, it might be excessive shedding. If you are experiencing unusual loss of hair chunks, bald spots, patchiness, it may indicate a medical condition requiring a physician inspection.
Subtle but prolonged hair shedding can also be expressed by gradual thinning in women or a receding hairline or bald patch that begins in the center of the scalp in men.

The hair-pull test
Nervous you're losing an excessive amount of hair? Take “the hair-pull test” on your hair at home:
Grab about 50 hairs in your hand, 2 cms away from your scalp, and run your fingers through it, pulling your hair gently. Count the number of hairs that fall out. Usually between five and eight hairs will come out — this is normal
However, an excess of 10 hairs or more is not as common. If you're worried, there is an easy way to stop shedding and start hair regeneration.
