How to Check the Serial Number on Your Mac or MacBook?

Every Apple computer has a unique identification number known as the serial number. In case, you take your Apple computer for service, a trade-in, or warranty registration, then this serial number will help you and Apple identify the type of MacBook you have.

Generally, you don’t need to know the serial number of your computer. But, if you need to, then you should know how to check it.

So, here, we will tell you six different ways in which you can check the serial number of your Mac or MacBook. You may use whichever way suits you.

Finding the Serial Number via “About This Mac”

It is super easy to find the serial number in a functional MacBook.

Step 1: First of all, go to the Apple menu icon in the upper-left corner of your MacBook.

Step 2: Now, select “About this Mac.” The very next screen will have your serial number, most likely as the last line on the screen.

Step 3: Here, you can get some more information about your MacBook, including the version of macOS installed, processor, memory, graphics card, etc.

Finding the Serial Number, In Case Your MacBook Won’t Turn On

If you are in the situation, wherein, your MacBook won’t turn on, and you need the serial number to get it serviced. Then what? Well, there is still an easy way to find your serial number. Carefully, turn your MacBook upside down to see the serial number imprinted on the computer. You will see some numbers and symbols right below the bold text indicating the type of your MacBook. In the second line of text, you will see your serial number, along with the details of assembly location and a bunch of compliance/FCC information.

Finding the Serial Number Via System Report

You have another option to find your serial number from the Apple menu.

Step 1: Navigate to the Apple menu icon in the upper-left corner of your MacBook.

Step 2: Click on “System Report.”

Step 3: A screen will appear, flashing every little detail about your MacBook, including hardware, software, network, etc.

Step 4: If you look at the second to the last line on this screen, you will be able to find the “Serial Number (system).”

Do Not Have Your MacBook Nearby

If for some reason, you need the serial number of your MacBook, and it is not with you. In that case, as well, you can find this number.

Step 1: Log in to your Apple account with your Apple ID.

Step 2: Move toward the bottom of the page and look for an option named “Devices.” On the page that appears, you will see all the Apple devices you are currently signed into.

Step 3: Select the MacBook you wish to find the serial number of, this will be followed by a small pop-up window, displaying all the relevant information about your MacBook.

Look on the MacBook Box or Receipt

Could be old-school but how does it matter, if you get the required information. You can always find the serial number printed on the original box in which your MacBook was shipped in. The same is true for the original receipt (email or printed). So, if you have either of these, you have the serial number of your MacBook.

Using Your MacBook Terminal

On that unlucky day, when every other method fails to locate your serial number, turn to Terminal on your MacBook.

Step 1: Go into your applications folder to locate the terminal. You can also use the Finder search icon at the top right of your menu bar.

Step 2: In the Finder search bar, type “system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | grep Serial,” then press enter.

Step 3: You can achieve the same results by entering “ioreg -l | grep IOPlatformSerialNumber.”
