After failing to save his wife from 'The Doctor', Kit Li is working as a bodyguard and secret stunt double for the cowardly martial arts film star Frankie Lane. Frankie attends an exhibition of the crown jewels of Russia at a Hong Kong hotel, and when the Doctor's gang take over the building in attempt to steal them, Kit is the only thing standing in their way. Will Frankie regain his courage? Will romance blossom between Kit and the nosy reporter? Who has the best Kung-Fu?
I just finished watching this movie and I have to say it was money well spent. The best description of High Risk would be a homage to Die Hard and a parody of Jackie Chan. Jet Li plays a former bomb squad commander whose last run in with the villain cost him his family. He has since become the double and bodyguard of Frankie, a Kung Fu superstar. Frankie is a cowardly, boozing, womanizer who has forgotten how he achieved his stardom.

Various elements play like Die Hard scenes including the characters and dialog. Mixed in with this are other subplots and some original scenes (at least to me). I won't spoil them by elaborating. Suffice to say, High Risk is an excellent blend of comedy, action (both martial arts and gunplay) and suspense with some romance thrown in. This movie does not take itself too seriously. Sometimes it parodies the martial arts genre with its voices, dialog and facial expressions!

On the down side, the subtitles leave something to be desired, blending into the background and being poorly translated on occasion. The disc has no features, just different subtitles. The video quality is average, audio Dolby Digital 2.0/Pro-Logic.

Any fan of Jet Li, Hong Kong films or action in general will enjoy this a lot. There is little if any wire Fu. Jet Li is Kit Li, a man who after his wife is killed by a terrorist with the moniker of 'The Doctor', finds himself working for Frankie Lone, the drunk action star who doesn't do his own stunts (Jacky Cheung lampooning Jackie Chan). When they find themselves at the mercy of the Doctor and his goons once again, this time after priceless diamonds, it's up to everyone to do their part to foil the terrorists evil plans. Like a Chinese Die Hard, this film lacks the spirit that made the Bruce Willis action extravaganza such a classic. The humor falls flat, and granted some of the action stunts and martial arts work, there's not enough of the latter, and only a few nice set pieces of the former (the helicopter scene is the only one that sticks out in my mind). The version I watched is missing some footage, I hear, but I doubt it would have made the film better really. As it is you get a simply passable film, with a hopelessly derivative storyline.
