Greysia Polii Wins Tokyo Olympic Gold Medal

The women's doubles badminton athlete Greysia Polii conveyed her hopes to her juniors at the PBSI badminton national team. He wants his success in winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics to be an inspiration for his juniors to excel in bringing Indonesia's name to the world stage.

The 33-year-old athlete who is paired with Apriyani Rahayu has a dream that the Indonesian women's doubles sector can be victorious and filled with potential athletes who will later replace her.

"Indeed there must be an example to be seen. So I hope this victory will be a motivation for my younger siblings to fill the void in the women's doubles," said Greysia in a virtual discussion at PBSI in Jakarta on Friday, August 6, 2021.

Based on ranking records on the official website of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Greysia / Apriyani are the only Indonesian women's doubles that are entrenched in the world's top 10 rankings. The closest position is Della Destiara Haris / Rizki Amelia Pradipta who is ranked 23rd. Followed by Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti / Ribka Sugiarto in 34th place.

Meanwhile, Nita Violina Marwah/Putri Syaikah and Yulfira Barkah/Jauza Fadillah Sugiarto are ranked 52nd and 59th, respectively. Seeing this condition, Greysia has a strong desire to contribute to the advancement of the Indonesian women's doubles sector in the future. "Hopefully I can help and play a role in developing women's doubles, at least pray for them. Of course I want to see my younger siblings can play better than me."

Greysia, an athlete who has competed in the Olympics three times, has confirmed that she will not hang up her racket in the near future. However, Greysia does not deny that age and family are strong considerations to shift the focus of her activities.

The athlete who will turn 34 this year said the decision to end his badminton career was just waiting for the right time. "In life there are seasons where we have to know when to stop and continue with another life. So I can't say when it's time (to retire)," he said.
