Getting the right haircut

Have you ever wondered why the hairdresser never seems to cut your hair the same way every time you go to the hairdresser? If this has happened to you more than once, let me explain. See shades of red hair

There are many things to consider; Do you visit the same stylist every time? Are you a relatively new customer? Do you regularly go to the hairdresser? What is the weather like outside, hot, humid, cold, wet or dry? Is your stylist more creative than last time? Does your hairdresser have a good memory? Are you explaining your haircut correctly? Does the stylist understand exactly what you want?

The easiest way to explain this is to explain how hair grows in the first place. Hair usually grows about 1/2 inch per month. Hair also does not grow evenly throughout the head. Some areas of the head grow faster than others, and the hair in some areas is finer and finer than in others.

What does all this mean when it comes to your haircut? Well...let's say you get a haircut every 4 weeks and then you're busy and don't come back for 7 weeks. Her hair grew 3 weeks longer and the shape of her hair changed dramatically depending on how fast your hair grows. Each week that you go longer than the previous appointment makes it harder to find previous haircut lines. And when you go to a new stylist that you've only been to a few times, they may not remember you or your haircut, so being able to find those lines is very important.

The weather can also affect this. If one day you go and it's cold outside, and the next it's wet, your haircut may look different. It may appear shorter or longer than normal, or the texture may look different. When your stylist cuts your hair, their creative eye sees something different and may cut your hair slightly differently to accommodate the change.

What about a stylist? If your stylist doesn't have a good memory, it may take them a few times to remember you and your haircut. It is bad? No, just make sure you explain it the same way every time until you're sure they remember your haircut, or have them take a few pictures on your phone so you both remember it.

How about your stylist who is in a more creative mood? Maybe your stylist took a new haircut course and learned a new technique. Depending on what your hair is doing that day, the stylist may decide to use one of these techniques. If this technique worked for your hair, tell them next time. They may not remember the last time they did it, and if your hair is doing something different than before, they may not remember themselves.
