Today, essays come in myriad forms and complexities depending on the purpose for which they are written.
For instance, in narrative essays, the writer involves the reader by placing him/her in the story through vivid and tangible explanations. In certain instances, the writer may intend to simply describe things, in which case the descriptive essay would be preferred.
At other times, the writer may be constrained to the factual and logical study of a topic to present an unbiased view on a study area. In such instances, the expository essay may be appropriate. Sometimes the writer may be limited in scope and may assume a biased position on an issue.
Thus, the writer may opt for the persuasive or argumentative essay, where the writer presents both sides of an argument with the sole aim of persuading the writer to accept his position.
- Format of an essay
Essay writing is mostly a creative endeavor, and may not be limited to a rigid layout. However, there is a universal format for writing essays as presented below.
- Introduction
In this paragraph, the writer introduces the topic.
The introduction is often accompanied by an overview of the essay.
In argumentative essays, the introductory paragraph is often concluded with a thesis statement.
It is recommended that the writer begins with a captivating statement that seizes and sustains the reader’s attention.
To achieve this, the writer may begin with a bold claim, a question or a proverb.
- Body
This is the main part of your essay, where arguments are won or lost. The body forms the largest portion of the task. A good essay must focus on the chosen topic by discussing each of the main points contained in the essay summary. This means if you have five points in your outline, then the body of your essay will have five paragraphs.
At all times the writer should ensure that the body paragraph supports the thesis statement. As such, the first paragraph should contain your strongest claim in support of your position. This is the topic sentence. Each topic sentence must be followed by the evidence in support of the claim made.
Evidence typically contains information, facts, figures, and diagrams plus in-text citations whenever necessary. Each body paragraph should be concluded with a sentence that sums up the discussion in the paragraph.
The preceding paragraphs should be similar in structure to the first body paragraph and should begin with your next strongest claim, backed with evidence and a conclusion.
- Conclusion
This is the last paragraph of the essay. It is essentially a reiteration of the thesis statement. It contains a summary of the main arguments in the essay and indicates your intention to terminate the essay.
