Coconut coir is one of the natural fibers that can be processed into several handicraft creations. The making process is not difficult to do. You just need perseverance, patience, and thoroughness in making it.

What is Coconut Rope Made of?

Coconut coir is part of the blanket or protector of coconuts in the form of crude fiber. The thickness of each coconut husk is different from one another, depending on the type of coconut. Generally, coconut coir used for crafts is taken from old coconuts. The old coconut one has thicker and more sturdy coir.

Make Lampshade Decoration Crafts Using Coconut Rope

For this project, you will only need a few items:

- Lampshade (new or old)
- Coconut rope
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

Rolls of coconut rope can be found at most hardware stores and large box stores. Coconut rope sometimes has a strong odor. I suggest unwinding the rope a little and letting it air out for a few days. The smell will dissipate after a few months anyway, but if you're sensitive to smell, it's best to ventilate the area first.

Let's start making our coconut rope lampshade. Locate the back seam of the lampshade. This is where you want to start. You can start at the top or bottom of the shadow. I chose the bottom. Apply about 3 inches of hot glue along the seam and press the coconut rope into the glue. It is important that your first row lines up exactly with the seam and that the seam is not visible under the cord.

All other rows of thread will depend on how accurately you glue the first row. Some people ask if hot glue will melt the heat from the lamp. This shouldn't happen unless you're using too much power for the size of the shadow. This shade measures 16 inches in diameter and contains one 75W light bulb. If you are covering small chandelier lampshades, you can always use high temp hot glue rather than regular hot glue if the temperature is a concern.

Continue wrapping the coconut rope around the lampshade, gluing as you go. Notice the end of the roll of coconut rope. If you are nearing the end, simply cut the cord so that it lines up with the back seam. Here you will again start with the second roll of rope.

Finish gluing the coconut rope, finishing with the back seam. Was it easy?
