Brimstone is an epic thriller set in the old west. A triumphant tale of powerful womanhood and resistance against a violent past that refuses to fade. Liz is a mute young woman who lives together with her husband and two children. She is a midwife and communicates through sign language, sometimes assisted by her daughter. Her relationship with her 4 year old son could be better, but otherwise Liz's life seems pretty good. When the new reverend climbs the pulpit in church, Liz freezes. She immediately knows she and her family are in danger. In four chapters we see not only how the reverend tries to take everything Liz loves away from her, but also how her life has unfolded in the past. Brimstone is a genre-bending film that draws inspiration from the American Southern Gothic genre, but also has a strong foothold in Dutch religious culture.
A well made movie that was nonetheless, difficult to watch due to relentless brutality. During one scene a pig is first shot in the head, and then it's throat is cut. It lies on the ground with it's legs moving for a long time in the background. I try to avoid movies where animals were actually killed in real life for the film. The violence against women in the movie was non-stop and maddening. Overall it was not a pleasant experience and I was left asking what was the point?
Not fun. Nice filming but a horrible movie! Quality is good but film sucks.Can I have my two and a half hours back? The story line was bad. The actors suck and the movie was just about horrifying stuff. I think some sick minded soul made this movie just to torture the people who watch this. Yours sincerely. The movie expert. i liked the part where the girls tongue was cut off, she had a horrible voice. and F#ck pizza Hawaii
If, for all of its godawful men, “Brimstone” has a hard time sewing its feminist fervor into anything more than a thin shawl over its bleak spectacle, this disturbingly watchable religious Western makes a solid case that hell is a place on Earth.
