The chronic visual disorder is caused due to the leakage of fluid or blood in the macula because of an abnormal blood vessel. There are two forms of AMD: wet and dry, of which the dry form is more prevalent. This is because wet AMD often starts as dry AMD, and, if detected early, blurry vision and the loss of sight can be prevented. Wet AMD affects the aging (40–80 years) population worldwide.

To manage this chronic eye disease, AMD drugs are in high demand. The rise in the incidence of AMD, lack of availability of a specific treatment, and surge in the geriatric population are the prime reasons behind the wet age-related macular degeneration market size increase. According to P&S Intelligence, it is projected to witness a CAGR of 7.1% during 2019–2024, to grow from $6.9 billion in 2018 to $10.4 billion in 2024. Wet AMD affects people in various age brackets — 40–59 years, 60–80 years, and more than 80 years. Those in the age bracket of 80 years are the most susceptible to wet AMD, which is why they account for the highest consumption of the related drugs.
